Commissioned by Bolton Council, NHS Bolton and the University of Bolton, local residents and students will benefit from NHS medical care, sports and injury therapy services, coupled with training and leisure facilities in a single £31m building; possibly the first combined facility building of its type in the UK. The Bolton One development is a healthcare, leisure, and research centre that combines a range of facilities in a single, integrated complex.
Within the complex, NHS Bolton provides GP services, in addition to an urgent care centre, with diagnostic and treatment facilities that act as a walk-in service. Spread across three floors, it comprises of a series of multi-functional consulting/clinical rooms, pharmacy, reception and waiting areas and support functions. The complex also houses: an eight-lane, 25m competition level swimming pool with seating for 250 spectators; a therapeutic hydrotherapy pool; a fitness suite; aerobics studio and community gym, managed on behalf of Bolton Council.

Further facilities, provided by Bolton University, include health and sports services, which sees a sports centre, an Athlete Development Centre and a Sports and Spinal Injury Clinic, again open to everyone. The building even has a 50 foot high climbing wall within the complex. The University's Centre for Research for Health and Wellbeing is also now based in Bolton One. With its investment in innovation, education and leisure facilities, Bolton is now described as a ‘star performer’ in the Greater Manchester region, according to a report by Drivers Jonas Deloitte.
Under recommendations from Sport England’s Design Guidance for Swimming Pools, special considerations needed to be made to achieve excellent thermal performance, whilst minimising risks of interstitial condensation and corrosion – a problem often prevalent in such enclosures. Bolton One, designed by IBI Group and built by Eric Wright Group showcases Euroclad’s combined Elite Systems acoustic roofing system, which not only exceeds Sport England’s recommendations but also projects the right image, of creative design and quality, for a flagship development.
