<h2>The Case for Refurbishment</h2>

<p>There are a number of reasons why a building owner might choose
to refurbish a building, ranging from pure aesthetics to changes in
the performance and functionality of the building. In many cases,
buildings are refurbished when they change their use or ownership,
but this is not always the case. In some cases, refurbishment is
prompted by problems associated with the existing building
envelope, such as leakage or damage, but these issues tend to be
addressed as part of a planned repair and maintenance
programme.</p>

<p>An increasingly important reason for refurbishment is to reduce
the energy consumption of the building through improvements to the
insulation and air-tightness of the building envelope.</p>

<p>The most common reasons for refurbishment are:</p>

<p>• To increase the asset value of the property.<br />
 • To improve the working environment for occupants.<br />
 • To increase space and/or building configuration.<br />
 • To increase rental income.<br />
 • To improve aesthetics and company image.<br />
 • To improve thermal efficiency and reduce energy costs.<br />
 • To replace a building envelope that has become damaged and
costly to repair.</p>

<p>Recent research suggests that refurbishment tends to be
undertaken for positive reasons, such as technical upgrades, more
often than it is used to overcome problems with the building
envelope.</p>

<p>Spacer systems have been described as the heart of a site
assembled metal roof or wall.&nbsp; They create the insulation
cavity to provide thermal insulation and sound reduction and they
provide the anchor fixing the outer sheet, via the bar and bracket,
to the structural steelwork. Recent work carried out by the Steel
Construction Institute tested spacer bar systems that have been
around for some time for their structural ability to sustain
required loads.&nbsp; Traditional spacer systems limit the
structural abilities of the metal roof and wall systems when
bracket depths reach around 200mm.&nbsp; The work highlighted the
benefit of the liner and top sheet in the stability and structural
capability of the system and concluded that standard systems are
only suitable for up to a maximum of 210 mm. From there twin skins
need a more robust system.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Enter the Eurobar Extra Mast.&nbsp; This range of spacer systems
has been rigorously tested by the British Board of Agrément as part
of Elite Systems.&nbsp; With ever-increasing construction depths
driven by revisions to Part L and increased awareness of the
implications of energy savings, it is comforting to know that there
is a proven, certified spacer system that can accommodate
insulation depths of up to 280mm on the roof or wall. The enhanced
systems are quick and easy to install and will deliver a major
contribution to meeting revised regulations.<br />

<p>If you want to save time and connect with someone direct at
Euroclad, without sending a speculative email or explaining
yourself to the switchboard, then we've developed a section of our
website just for you.&nbsp; Introducing the new Staff area where
you can find the most relevant person to speak to and put a face to
a name.&nbsp; You may know who you want to contact but can't find
their number or remember their email address.&nbsp; Or you may know
what department you want to speak to and don't mind who answers
your questions, as long as somebody answers them!&nbsp; The contact
details in the Staff area are shown grouped by department with
direct dial telephone numbers and email addresses.&nbsp; We want to
make it easier for you to make the right connection with Euroclad
and this is one of the many ways in which we're trying to do just
that. - <a href="/about-euroclad/staff.aspx" title="Staff" class="url">Click

<p><em>"Euroclad Linear 3 Façade System with cassette panels in
alternating shades of metallic grey was specified for the extension
to the Institute of Sport and Exercise at the University of Dundee.
From the outset Euroclad provided Nicoll Studios with sound advice
and information to assist in the decision making and selection
process for the cladding. The curved form of the building presented
interesting technical challenges for the design team. Euroclad's
technical expertise, advice and support were invaluable during the
design development of the cladding and support system. This was
also matched by their on-site and post completion support.</em></p>

and we would be happy to collaborate with them on future projects"

<p><em style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;">"Euroclad have been a
vital link in our supply chain for nearly thirty years. Their
technical expertise has been of great assistance to us on many
occasions. They have consistently provided a service and product
which reflects are own quality standards and have helped us keep to
the forefront of product innovation, and compliance with
regulations and legislation. This is all managed with a personal
touch and commitment to customer service. In thirty years I cannot
remember one occasion when we have been seriously let down.
Recently we completed a prestigious new cruise terminal building at
Southampton docks. The construction involved a steel deck spanning
8.0m, Euroclad took an innovative approach to the design and were
able to carry out the calculations to prove the most economic
solution. They supplied 15,000 square metres of material in a very
short lead time." Tom Colbourne.</em></p>

<p>''The original specification called for 1000m2 of traditional
Zinc standing seam to match in with all the remaining buildings
within the University Campus. The University is set within both a
greenbelt and conservation area and local planning would not allow
an industrial looking roof to be constructed. With the help of
Euroclad and their Urban standing seam system we were able to offer
the client a cost effective but very much aesthetically similar
alternative to the traditional zinc system originally specified.
The client and architect were very pleased with the finished roofs
and how alike they were to other traditional zinc roofs around
them. The main contractor was not only very satisfied with the
appearance but also the speed of installation and cost of the
system compared to the zinc system.'' Andy Taylor, Director.</p>
